Guiding Principles
Work is an integrated part of life. The quality of one affects the other. To be my best in both, I act and reflect upon these principles.
Good design is in the details.
The big picture is important but it’s the little details that make something special. It means being thoughtful in every decision and being attentive even to the things that seem at first glance, insignificant.
Iterate. Test. Learn. Repeat.
Iterations lead to exploring multiple solutions. Testing iterations can validate or challenge assumptions and deliver new insights. The exploration process with various iterations is a consistent source of informative and somethings surprising results.
Balance is key.
Whether it’s juggling business goals and user needs or choosing to do pilates versus binge-watching “Planet Earth”, life is all about striking the right balance. This holds especially true in the work place and design.
Be open. Stay curious.
Being open to new ideas and perspectives delivers inspiration and at times, solutions that would have been invisible otherwise. Being open to new, even conflicting points of view has made me a better designer. To increase my exposure of ‘new’, I stay curious.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Treating others with the same respect, compassion, and integrity as I would expect has always been my priority. Co-workers, children, strangers, even pets – treating others with kindness enables our world to be a better place.
Being a good designer means being a good human.
Design involves creating solutions for humans. To get to these solutions, good designers must ultimately understand humans, be empathetic and be compassionate.
Forever Evolving
My Journey So Far
My path to design didn’t start in design school. I first discovered my love for design in high school during a HTML and Flash class. When I went to UCLA for college, I studied Electrical Engineering and graduated with a Psychology degree. It wasn’t until after college that I continued to pursue my love for design, taking extension classes and learning as much as I could online. I then landed small freelance gigs that led to full-time jobs.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a huge range of projects and platforms. I’ve also had amazing mentors (Julie Ashkenazi and Yazmina Cadiz) very early in my career, who engraved the importance of hierarchy and attention to detail. They were also my unofficial mentors who showed me the lay of the land and pushed me to be my best. I am forever grateful. One day, I hope to inspire others the same way they have inspired me.
An Animation About My Roots
My approach to design is influence by living in various parts of the globe. Absorbing new cultures and understanding the way people live, connect and thrive in various parts of the world has made me a better designer.
WANT TO KNOW MORE?
I collect experiences.
I am a firm believer in “you won’t know, unless you try it.” I love trying new things whether it’s a new workout, new restaurant, scuba diving or traveling. I also enjoy documenting my experiences through photography, typically with my iPhone.
